Where is God?
Of all the types of suffering we see in the world, the most difficult to understand is the suffering of innocent children. We watch daily for the last few months the tragedy in Haiti. Children flash before our eyes, hurt and orphaned. After a while, the images blurred together, leaving us numb to what we were seeing.
You hurt for these Children and the countless others you will never know, but somehow identify with. There is no relation just the connection of humanity.
You can't help but feel a sense of helplessness when such disasters occur. The pull to help is always there, just knowing how is where the confusion comes into play. I want so much to reach out and hold those children who have lost the biggest part of their lives.. Their parents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, Grandparents. All in one huge instant. I want to tell them there is a God who loves them and does care. There is a God that sees beyond this tragedy and has great plans for these beautiful people.
As a parent I watch my oldest boy ( 14) start questioning why he has Cystic Fibrosis. Angry at times because of this disease, heartbroken many times when he stands out because of CF. Frustrated when kids make fun when he's coughing, moving back like he's got a disease they can catch. The recent months have been dealing with these new feelings with him. I want to take it from him, I want to protect him and be a security for him but we are past that place.
It's so easy to shake our fists at God when something painful happens to us. The most natural question to ask is, Where is God in all of this?. I've asked many times where is God in my boys health, where is God during all these deployments, Where is God while I watch my daughter go down a destructive path away from him. Where is God in all of this? Hasn't he Promised a full life to his children? Doesn't he care when we hurt?
Then I remember YES God does care. He cares so much that it cost Him the life of His only son. When we think that God doesn't care about us or understands our sufferings, We forget that the Son of God suffered beyond what any of us can even imagine.
When we ask, Where is God when we suffer? we need to look only to Christ, who suffered for us so we can live eternaly with our father. When we do suffer we can take comfort in knowing that we are Partners with Christ in his suffering ( 1 Peter 4:13) We may not like it or understand why, but we know there is Someone who has gone before us and promises to never leave us.
SO Hold on to your children a little closer and pray for those children who are suffering in Haiti who don't have parents to hold them. And Remember God does understand the pain and hurts with us.
